Thanks everyone for your responses, I can now see that whilst my blood relative was illegitimate (Matilda Caddick BABB) which means that I will be unable to trace back further on her paternal side) I was very surprised to learn that her mother had been widowed twice, in such a short space of time.
So to sum up, should anyone else be interested in any of those mentioned, Mary Ann SNOW bap 12 May 1811, St Augustine-the-Less, Bristol, was the daughter of Jeremiah & Jane SNOW
m1 Mary Ann SNOW & William PRIGG 4 May 1829, St Mary le Port, Bristol
Son of Mary Ann & William PRIGG
Thomas PRIGG bap 25 Apr 1830
William PRIGG bur 13 Nov 1831, St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol age 23
m2 MARY ANN PRIGG & John CADDICK 8th Dec 1833, St Mary Le Port, Bristol
Children of Mary Ann & John CADDICK
Martha (b c 1834)
James (b c 1840)
Mary Ann (b c 1843)
Joseph (b c 1845)
John CADDICK bur 22 Apr 1845 Bedminster, St John age 35
Matilda & Edwin (twins) (b 4th quarter 1850) also had the surname CADDICK, although as they were not conceived at the time of the death of John CADDICK, they could not have been his children and were therefore illegitimate.
At the time of the 1851 census, Mary Ann (mother) Martha, James, Mary Ann (daughter), Joseph, Matilda and Edwin were all living in Bedminster Union Workhouse. It is possible that the twins were born there, although the Birth registration Index for Matilda, shows the registration district as Clifton. On workhouse records, all of the children have their mother’s maiden name recorded as SNOW.
m3 Mary Ann CADDICK & William BABB 12th May 1856, St Jude, Bristol
William BABB was a widower with children of his own. Matilda changed her surname to a middle name and took the surname BABB. She is recorded as Matilda Caddick BABB on her marriage certificate to William HARE on 21 Nov 1867 at Bristol Register Office.
Matilda & William HARE are my Great Grandparents.
I now have found all 16 of my great great grandparents with the exception of the real father of Matilda Caddick BABB, for whom I will only ever know the name of her step father.
Many thanks
