Agnes Straiton or Smith, Huddersfield
« on: Tuesday 09 June 20 16:50 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for any information on an Agnes Straiton or Smith, born 1881 in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.  She was married to a William Smith.  In 1939, according to Register, they were residing at 71 South Street, Huddersfield.

Thanks

Tom

If you are researching her ancestry - you need to use www.scotlandspeople.gov.ukIndex shows birth reg 1882.   You need to download a copy of that cert to see if the day and month correspond with her birthdate on the 1939 entry.  It's not uncommon to find the birthyear a year out

See later reply

You appear to have either Ancestry or FindMyPast access so can look for her on the 1891 Scottish census.  There are 2 entries - one b 1881 Girthon is with grandmother surname McQuarrie so if this is your Agnes you need to download her birth cert from SP.  However - both those entries show in 1901 in Scotland whereas your Agnes was in Huddersfield in 1901 - see below

Her marriage is on freebmd in 1901 if she married William Smith - marriage was in Liverpool.  It was a civil marriage so can't be looked up in parish records www.lancashirebmd.org.uk.  You would need to buy a copy of the cert

You can look for her on the 1911 census to see what children were born up to that date and then use freebmd to search for any later births.  Birthplace Gatehouse of Fleet

If you are looking for her death - you can use freebmd

In 1901 she is in Huddersfield as a visitor with a family surname McKean who originate from Scotland

The 1882 birth for Agnes Straiton is online and she was the illegitimate daughter of Annie b 14.4.1882 so not your Agnes.  There is no 1881 birth on SP.  This birth relates to the 1891 entry b 1883 mother Annie which only leaves the entry with grandmother

Your Agnes Straiton is shown in the 1891 census aged 10 and living with Lachlina McQuarrie and is listed as a grandchild. There are  4 other children listed as grand children but I can not find birth certs for them under any McQuarrie mothers.
I think that there was an adoption  / fostering service going on for orphans or Illegitimate children. A daughter of Lachlina , Catherine Stott nee mcquarrie had a boarding house in Gatehouse and the census for 1881 had children shown as boarders and 1 later as g/child of Lachlina . John Stott later in life shown as a town Officer.

Your Agnes Straiton mother I think is a Annie Straiton and G/mother was Isabella Shields, nee Fitzsimmons, Annie later married a William Burgoyne in 1893 at Kirkcudbright when she was 33.

No response or acknowledgement from Tom since earlier replies were posted

As you have her full birthdate on the 1939 entry that could help trace her birth

Hi rossdad,

Agnes was the daughter of Mary McQuarrie and a Andrew Straiton. Mary and Andrew never married.
Mary had another 2 children to other fathers, before marrying in 1900.  Agnes was born 1 April 1881.  I was just trying to find her death, but with a married surname of Smith, I believe it will be a difficult task.

Thanks for all the help.

Tom
