help please with Peninsular Medal Roll record etc
« on: Tuesday 09 June 20 18:04 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help?
My ancestor's Peninsular Medal Roll record states:
12th Light Dragoons
No of Clasps: 2
Particular of Clasps: S V
Please can anyone confirm that S and V stand for Salamanca and Vittoria?
And is a Clasp, the same thing as a medal?

I also have his British Army Service record which states that he fought in the Peninsular War and was at Waterloo. So, does anyone know if apart from these two records, there would be any further records for him?

Thanks,
Kit

A clasp is a metal bar which is fitted over the medal ribbon and shows the name (and sometimes the date) of a battle or campaign.

The mighty wiki states that 21 clasps were issued for the Peninsula Wars.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_General_Service_Medal has details and images.

There were clasps for Sahagun, Salamanca, San Sebastian, Vimiera and Vitoria - you would need someone more expert than I to identify the S and V for your ancestor.

What was his name, there may be a discharge record although it sound as if you have it?

The history of the regiment (up to 1816 the 12th Royal Lancers) will be of interest and may answer the question

Thanks Philip and Max for your replies, which I really do appreciate.
At the moment I am engrossed in reading the history of the regiment, which as you say, may answer my queries - it's truly fascinating!

Thanks again,
Kit
