Grizagon(e) Joyce/Joice - Great Dunmow - 1707
« on: Tuesday 09 June 20 19:43 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I came across the name Grizagone/Grizagon in my tree today for the first time.  Does anyone know of its origins?  Grizagone Joyce (or Joice) was born in 1707 in Great Dunmow, to Samuel and Grizagone.

Any ideas would be interesting to read!

Many thanks.

It does sound unusual.  :)

However, a quick look sees a few around the time in Essex: your JOICE, SURRIDGE, HAMMOND, PATCHEY, CLAPTON, PERRIN ...

An alternate spelling is Chrysagon, which on rootsweb has also been linked to Chrysoogone, Grisigon, Griseccon, Grisegond, Grisigion.

And according to this blog about the 1965 movie "The War Lord" starring Charlton Heston as Chrysogon:
“Chrysagon” is a Greek name, although St. Chrysagon is an obscure saint venerated by Catholics

Thanks for the info. I've linked back to Surridge too.

A Catholic Saint? Interesting. Definitely a line to pursue. They've all been C of R so far...will see what I can turn up!
