Boxswell (location)
« on: Wednesday 10 June 20 10:12 BST (UK) »
G'day folks, I have a will of 1549 and the testator says he was born in Boxswell Essex. I have not been able to locate this place with any certainty. Ive no doubt the modern spelling may be different. Can anyone help?

Thanks, Nigel

Possibly Roxwell. I've seen that mistranscribed as Boxwell.

It comes up several times on Google with the spelling Boxwell (no s) but I can't see where it was!

eg from Debrett's peerage:

John-Grover Fortescue, of Boxwell, Essex.

There's a great example of the common mistranscription of Roxwell as Boxwell:

"John Faithful-Grover Fortescue, of Roxwell, (not Boxwell as erroneously printed) in Essex."

Is it the will of Humfery Lightfote by any chance? The printed index has it as Roxswell:

Yes it is,

Ive just done a search on TNA under wills for [place] "Roxwell" and 48 results came up.

Goggled it under Roxwell not Boxwell and this time it came up on wiki, located near Chelmsford it seems.

Many thanks folks for your input,  Regards, Nigel

The scribes writing in the will was the usual scrawl, "Boxswell" but Roxwell it must be. On the early OS map there is a place called Lightfoot near Roxwell to much of a coincidence not to be the right place for the birth place of Humfrey Lightfote
