Thank you also for the 1841 census details, that definitely looks like Mary and her children.

I’ve got a feeling that maybe he wasn’t John Marshall Brock but just John Brock and that his father wasn’t Roger Brock.  If this is correct, does anyone have any idea who John’s parents could be?   

Also what Mary’s surname could be if it’s not Nichols?

Oh that’s such interesting information about letter.  What does ‘hung up at Bury Gaol’ mean?

Apparently 'Hung up' was a form of hanging but not round the neck
