Deaths in the Blaby district, 1837
« on: Thursday 11 June 20 09:05 BST (UK) »
Free BMD shows me two Holyland deaths in the Blaby registration district in 1837; I’ve checked and they are on the original “civil deaths and burials” list.

I don’t know whereabouts in the Blaby district the family lived, but there are no matching burials in the church registers online (findmypast).

Does anyone know if there are church registers for this area and time that are not digitised on FindMyPast? Or was there already a civic graveyard in the area at that time, and if so, where?

In 1837, there were more than 20 parishes in the Blaby Registration District.

See: https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/blaby.html

Have you checked ALL the parishes?

According to the inquest in the newspapers, William was found dead in Oadby. There were burials there in 1837, but I can't see one for William.

He was charged with embezzling a quantity of potatoes in Oadby in 1836

He had walked to South Croxton on the day before his death, and ridden back.

Mary, the wife of William Holyland, was buried in South Croxton 1827, age 61. She may have been his mother.
There are no records of the burials on FindMyPast for that period, so perhaps he was buried there.

Thanks, DCB, that's very helpful. I don't know why I hadn't spotted that inquest in the paper before!

I know which William this was now. He was from South Croxton and yes,the Mary who died in 1827 was his mother. I've a feeling that there's a commemorative stone in the graveyard there, but I'm not sure; and even with a memorial there, he could have been buried elsewhere.

By the way the South Croxton burials are on Find My Past, I've seen them before, although this man's burial isn't. But I don't blame you for not finding them as FindMyPast has indexed them as Slawston!

I can see them now, but they seem to be missing from 1837 to 1841.

I used to live near South Croxton at one time and they held an art exhibition every Summer.

I have sent an error report to FindMyPast, but it can take a while for them to rectify them.
