I wonder if the birthplace of the 1871 Richard was Fencott, Staffordshire  :-\

I like Fencott as a reading (in Oxfordshire, though, I think?).

Sorry - Yes Oxfordshire

Birthplace of Fencott works with this possible Birth Reg from Freebmd:

Richard Cooper - Headington 16 - 60 Mar 1839 Qtr

Richard says he is 42 on the 1881 Census.

As an aside, the Staffordshire place name could be Thursfield written as Tursfield although by this time it had changed its name to Newchapel. A further net check showed that there is still a Thursfield Primary School. Location is in the Potteries.

After examining the pages around this one, I believe what is written is:  Totsfield

He is generally a good writer but has major eccentricities as well - many concerning the letter d.

See for example the name Alfred on Page 23.  Note variants for d and e.

On the same page the surname Tisdale for his T.

(The record in question is on RG 11/67/75/29.)

I've been looking through this at the same time you must have been writing HD
I had come to the conclusion it is 'Totsfield'.
As you say, many inconsistencies in his writing.
Even on this page, Richard Cuper's name is spelt' Richarg', so I think we're safe to say the place in question ends in 'field'.

Added: What I don't understand is why his wife seems to come from the same place - there is a tick under this 'Totsfield' place name on her line, but they are from 2 different counties, seemingly, hundred of miles apart?
What does she give as place of birth in other Censuses?

Unfortunately Richard Cooper’s birthplace in this record is not clear - seems to be somewhere beginning with F in Oxfordshire. Ancestry have it as Fenowll, but I see something closer to Fenouth.

Ref: RG10/65/12/18.

Can you post this bit avm so we can take a look? (Sorry, no subs at the moment).

Can't find a 'Totsfield' (that's not to say there isn't some small place called that somewhere.)
There is a 'Tatsfield' which must be near the Kent/Surrey border South East of London. About 20 miles from Hammersmith.
Long way from Oxfordshire or Staffordshire though!

Sophia Ann Tanner (as registered, but baptised Ann Sophia) was born in Bampton, Oxfordshire in 1847 (Witney district). Her family appears in several censuses in Weald, a hamlet in the parish of Bampton.

It seems likely the underlying household schedule in 1881 was poorly written as the enumerator’s first attempt at transcribing Sophia’s name was “Stephen”. We will never know what he had to work with for the birthplaces!

I wonder where the son William was in 1891 (William Charles Cooper, mmn Tanner, Jun qtr 1884 Fulham).

He’s with his mother Sophia Cooper in 1901 aged 17.  Wouldn’t it be nice if he was with Cooper relatives in 1891.

The youngest child of the family seems to be Thomas James Cooper, mmn Tanner, Dec qtr 1886 Fulham. He wasn’t baptised until September 1889.
