The man who married Margaret Quick Humphrey has Army Records on FindMyPast.
Indexed under the date 28th April 1896 but if you keep going through the record it has his original attestation in 1883.

This information has been sought for near on a quarter of a century, my thanks.

Can find nothing - please advise. Thank you.

So he was soldier 1081 in the Royal Fusiliers from 1883. Transferred to the army reserve in January 1891 - hence able to take up employment at the Asylum - discharged from the army in 1895, re-enlisted as a reservist in 1896, served in South Africa from 10 Feb 1900 to 20 April 1901.

My eyes are going funny tonight - does that say he served in 3rd Battalion East Surrey Regiment?

My grandfather died in 1944, twelve years before I was born.

So he was in the Second Boer War (11 October 1899 – 31 May 1902). And he enlisted when he was 16.

Oh wow!  If you don't know someone, then details such as tattoos etc can really help build up a picture.

Not sure what you can see or not, but parents names and address are given as George and Sarah Emma Kemp, of 101 Kentish Town Road.  Siblings are George and Emma.
