David PHEMISTER, born 1842, Aberdeen
« on: Thursday 11 June 20 20:18 BST (UK) »
Hello,

David PHEMISTER married Catherine ROSS on 05/05/1865 in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen.   Both were aged 22 and born in the city.

The 1901 England Census at RG13/4642/53, p.39, indicates David PHEMISTER is now living in West Hartlepool, Durham, and is a Widower.

Can someone please discover when Catherine died and, also, when David died.

Thank you,

BAC3

PHIMESTER   DAVID   WILLM PHIMESTER/MARY NOBLE   24/3/1843    7/9/1843   Aberdeen, St Mary's with St Peter's - RC

PHEMISTER   DAVID   ROSS   CATHERINE   1865   St Nicholas

1861 & 1871 in Royal Navy – 1901 as posted, he was a Tramway Cleaner.

I know these disagree with the 1901 census but I wonder?

David was not on Scottish census 1901.
PHIMISTER   DAVID   65   1905   Death    St Nicholas

A Catherine age 60 is on the 1901 census in Moray?
PHIMISTER   CATHERINE   62   1905   Death   Turriff

A tree on Ancestry has his death 30/4/1905 Aberdeen as Colc has mentioned also death for
Catherine 19/3/1905 Turriff ..Might be worth checking on Scotlands People to confirm

Good Morning Colin,

Thank you for your research findings .........I am extremely grateful.

David PHEMISTER joined the Merchant Navy in 1859 when he was 17 years of age and thus the death in 1905 is quite feasible but Catherine's death in 1905 would not be if the 1901 Census identified him as a Widower.

Your opening line is a little confusing, however, as I am not sure who the people are nor the date.   His marriage entry to Catherine ROSS states his father was William PHEMISTER, a Canvas Weaver, and mother Elspet BISSET, a Cotton Mill Worker.   Interestingly, the couple's 3rd child born in 1873 was Elsie Bisset PHEMISTER, who appears on the 1881 Census in Aberdeen with her mother but not 1891, although she died in the August of 1891.   Sadly, all their 3 children died before adulthood which denies an avenue of research.

Thank you once again for all your help.

Death on Scotlands People for  Catherine Phimster in 1905 Turrif age 62 is also recorded as her maiden name Ross ..Perhaps the couple were separated and that's why he put down he was a widower as a lot of people done

The first line is the only birth/baptism I could find on SP around 1842.

I could only find one 1851 census for David in Aberdeen but only adult was Ann.

I could not find a marriage for William and Elspet.

Not sure if you have David on the 1891 census but this could be a possibility which would suggest he was separated from Catherine
1891 census 11,Park Street Anderston Glasgow
David Phimster age 49 birth place Aberdeen occupation seaman
Margaret Phimster age 37 born Fifeshire down as wife

Hello,

I wrote to the "Owner" of the Family Tree but no reply yet........the one aspect of the Tree that concerned me was simply no citations were quoted, particularly for the deaths.

I am more or less happy with David PHEMISTER's biography as far 1901 but Rosie's idea that the couple became estranged has some traction and certainly provides justifiable possibilities.   Catherine's death in 1905 is quite conclusive (the "ROSS" maiden name 8)) and I will run with it provisionally.   On the other hand the "PHIMSTER" suggestion I tend to feel is entirely a different person.

Thank you
