When my last house was built in 1896, all the builders wrote their names on an inside frame of one of the front sash windows. There were three men from the same family - "Tom Rought (Old Tom), Tom Rought (Tom) and Tom Rought (Young Tom). One of their descendants still lives locally and is called Tom Rought.

I must have been destined to be concerned with the past. When my bedroom was being redecorated when I was very young, I wrote my name, address(why?) and age on the plaster that the paper soon covered. Irresistible to do.

Our house was built in 1966, so not that old really..... we moved here in 1987.
when we removed the wall paper on the landing one wall had details of all the previous residents written on it.
Our children 9 & 11 at the time thought this was very exciting and wanted to add their names and ours and the date to the list which we duly did.
We will be coming up to redecorate probably next year so this time I'll make a note of the names as I didn't the last time... wasn't into family history then but it would be a nice record to keep for future home owners or maybe I should just let it be revealed to them when they come to decorate as we found... of course if anyone paints the wall the names will be lost for ever!

When we removed the anaglypta from the panels on the cellar door of our 1903 house we found a pencil inscription from the first occupants giving the date and weather conditions when they moved in. It's still there, despite being stripped in an acid bath.

When it’s very cold and the single glazed window condensates in my bedroom an American Express sign appears !

It could be that at some time in the past the "sticker" that was often attached to windows in shops to indicate that A.A. was accepted there, had been so long on the glass that it had sort of "imprinted"? Or - a very long shot, if the window wasn't somewhere where that would be sensible, perhaps a single pane was replaced with a pane, or piece cut from a larger pane, that had been "logo'd" in that way?

I think it is probably the former.

I wondered if the previous owners did B&B but I haven’t found any evidence of it re advertising, newspaper archives etc.

I have done quite a bit of research on my house, a Victorian terrace.

Found 3 deaths, and marriage but sadly no births.
