William Tooke Shoemaker about 1861
« on: Monday 15 June 20 16:18 BST (UK) »
My great Grandfather was William Tooke, Census has him born Norwich 1861 and his Marriage Certificate says his father was also William - deceased - and was a shoemaker.

The likeliest candidate for Wm Junior seems to be Born in 1861 in Coslaney district in Norwich - but his father appears to be Samuel not William  - the family however are involved in leather work - described as a Cordwainer.

Is there any record of a William as a Cordwainer or Shoe Maker in around 1861 in Norwich?

I've been stuck on this for years... it seem the right William is hiding.

Have you considered the possibility he was illegitimate & made up a fathers name when he married as many illegitimate children did in those days

Do you have him on the 1871 census?   When & who did he marry?

His father William Tooke.

It also said that the fathers of both groom and bride were Thomas Brown. Surely some mistake :)
