Bridget Toolan from Roscommon, Ireland
« on: Monday 15 June 20 18:27 BST (UK) »
My Great grandmother Bridget Toolan was born in 1834 in Roscommon and then moved to West Hartlepool, Durham, England. (Bridget married a Martin McManus also from Roscommon
If anyone has anymore information about Bridget and the Toolan family I would very much like to hear from them.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat  :)

They married in Newcastle - September 1865 Volume 10b pg 247
Martin McManus and Bridget Toolan are on the same page.
Do you have the marriage details with Bridget’s father’s name?

Good morning and many thanks for your help.
I'm sorry but I don't have their marriage certificate. I'm relatively new to all this and most of the time don't know where to look.
I did find Martin the son on the Middlesbrough Indexes (Marriages)
Result   Year   Forename (Surname)   Initial   Ref Number   Click to contact
1   1903   MARGARET (JACKSON)   A   R-X40M-1-0-214   Redcar & Cleveland
2   1903   MARTIN (MCMANUS)      R-X40M-1-0-214   Redcar & Cleveland
*****
I only wish that I could tell you more.

Pauline.

Thank you.
As you can see, there is a discrepancy with the age/year of birth you have given. This is a regular occurrence with records but does not help in trying to go back to Roscommon records.
Irish registrations began in 1864, so you would be looking at Parish records for Bridget’s baptism.
You would need the Catholic or Civil Parish. I am assuming that the family were Catholic.
If you get the 1865 marriage certificate I posted earlier, it would give you the fathers’ names and the witnesses might help in identifying them also.

I see that there is another McManus in the censuses with your family. If I recall, he is a nephew so there might be McManus family records available.

I have tried for other Toolans local to your family but no success yet.

Hello again.
I really appreciate all this help and hope you have the patience of a saint as this is all so new to me and yes, the family were catholic.

Do you have Martin and Bridget in the censuses?
It would not help you find her origins but is good to have.

As I said, you need to purchase the marriage certificate. I gave you the reference earlier but you can look it up on FreeBMD. https://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Here is info re ordering.

If you have Access to the subscription sites, Ancestry or Find My Past, you can search indexes for Catholic Baptisms, otherwise this site is free but you will need the date and place - Parish to search.
