GUYANA- Cecil Theodore Martin
« on: Tuesday 16 June 20 15:11 BST (UK) »
Hi, everyone- I am trying to research my grandfather, and I am coming up with a dead end when I try to find out information about his mother. My grandfather's info: Cecil Theodore Martin, born in Georgetown, Demerara-Mahaica, Guyana on August 21, 1894. I have found info saying his likely father was Arthur Alexander Martin (born in Burford, Shropshire, England in 1860). I can't find my grandfather's birth record or anything about his mother, however. Any suggestions you could offer would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

He seems to have been a bit vague about his birth year. His US naturalisation records say 1885; his WW1 US draft registration says 1882.

Why do you think his father was Arthur Alexander Martin from Burford, Shropshire?

Thanks for taking the time to reply! :)

He died in 1981 and yes, from what I was told he lied about his age to appear older at various times.

I got his potential father's info from an Ancestry.com hint. (I don't have an account, so there is a limit to what I can view.) This man was born in Britain but died in British Guiana (Guyana's former name) in 1915, plus one of my cousins was named Arthur Alexander. It could be a coincidence, but it seems to support Arthur Alexander Martin being Cecil's dad.

My grandmother, who my grandfather married in the early 1940's in New York City was named Fritzi Schwarz. I did find a listing for a Cecil Martin married to a Rutzi Schwarz, but I think that might just be a bad transcription- the original source was behind a paywall so I couldn't see it.

We must be talking about BRITISH Guiana ...... you know like BRITISH WEST HARTLEPOOL.

I found one distant line to me on the 1896 Essequibo Census transcribed by Michael McTurk. Internet).
Essequibo being near to the Venezuelan border. And that is it. No more records. Perhaps there are records still there but have not been transcribed and made available.

Yes! :) All of my grandfather's records would be under British Guiana since it didn't become Guyana until 1966.

There is only one Arthur Martin born Burford in the UK records. He worked all his adult life as a labourer in a stone quarry in Tenbury, Worcestershire in England so I don't think he is your man's father.

According to a source on Ancestry there is an Arthur Alexander Martin who died in British Guiana in 1915. Unfortunately since I'm not a member I can't download the original document, though. :( It seems like Arthur Martin must be a pretty common name, though. :)

I can see that crops up in submitted trees but as far as I can see there is no source record for it.

Well, I appreciate you taking the time to look, nonetheless. The search continues! :) I guess I need to track down a birth record for my grandfather.
