He lived! He Died! Lionel "Leo" Augustus Mercer
« on: Tuesday 16 June 20 17:53 BST (UK) »
Lionel "Leo" Augustus Mercer was born illegitimate on the 26 April 1905 in NZ (His mother was using the pesudonym of Mercer has her surname at the time).

Leo was placed into state care/orphanages and, as far as I know, he never knew who his parents were.  The family history in NZ is long and convoluted but I have pretty much all of that information.

There are a couple of school records for him in NZ but nothing else.

At the age of 22 on the 9 Sept 1927 he boards a boat for NSW Australia... AND COMPLETELY DISAPPEARS UNTIL HIS death on 23 Nov 1994 in Sunbury, Victoria, Australia.

I have a copy of a cemetery plaque and his probate which identifies no living relatives and that's it:(

Surely, there would be census docs or some kind of record of the man in Australia?  I've spent countless hours trawling through Trove and the Australian National Archives to no avail.

If anyone with superior research skills could take a look at this for me to see if I can break through the brick wall... I would be MOST GRATEFUL.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

 :)

Back in November 2017,  our OP asked about the Probate for this chap on a separate thread to the NZ ones..

Cando looked it up.   Letters of Administration, PROV.

Sunbury had a mental health facility, so its possible he was a resident

Hi Matthew (and MAJM) thanks very much for taking up the request:)

Yes, I was the original inquirer for Lionel as the previous thread shows.  At that time I also applied for and received his Probate papers which essentially said he had no family at all.

I also have a copy of the plaque that his "friends" apparently sorted out for him on his death in Sunbury.

Whilst, trying to expand my research scope yesterday, I did note a comment on his probate docs that said he has been living in "community accommodation".  I took that to mean a senior citizen complex, but your comment about a mental health facility might be closer to the mark and may be the chip in my brick wall I have been looking for!

Given the absence of mentions of him in any other official, or media, docs I thought any of the following was possible:
1) He was in jail
2) He entered the priesthood
3) He was a "street person"
4) Living "off the grid" in the "outback"

I never even considered mental health facilities, but given his entire childhood/teenage years in NZ orphanages that shouldn't be a surprise.

His Probate Docs listed his address as: Community Accommodation Sunbury, 2 Underhill Court,  Sunbury, Victoria

His death is still quite recent so I doubt I could get access to those records even if I located them.  But I do wonder since I am his nearest living relative whether I might be able to apply for them to the Victoria State Gov.   I will pursue that:)

Thanks again!!!
Regards, Carol

Thanks for the follow up jomcd967.  Yes, from the links you provided it sounds like it is a residential facility for folks with mental challenges/issues.  However, the images of his address on Google show it as a residential property in a residential neighbourhood.

I did wonder if Lionel lived in some kind of facility as a long-term resident i.e. decades (because I can't find any government records for him since 1927), or if it was more an aging related matter e.g. dementia.

I will contact the local centre to see if they can shed any light on it all. Thanks:)
