1921 census survey from findmypast
« on: Wednesday 17 June 20 17:41 BST (UK) »
Just had a survey from findmypast asking what I would like to see for the 1921 census. By the way the questions are written we are going to have to buy credits to view the images. >:(

Interesting.

Isn’t FindMyPast going to include the 1921 census in their searchable records in early 2022 ?

Not surprised in the least that we will have to pay out more money, on top of our current subscriptions, to view the 1921 census regardless of who has the monopoly.  We did for 1911 and the 1939 register.  C'est la vie  :-X  Our choice  :)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I too expected (and accept) that, to start with at least, access will not be included in a sub. As with other databases which involved massive investment to scan, transcribe and host they will in the fullness of time be included in a sub.

As with other releases I have a small list of those I will likely pay for as PPV to finally solve some questions. After that I will wait for it to be included in a sub.

I hope the credits aren't going to be too expensive ...... I got a trial of genealogist and one record cost 25 credits which I was very surprised at and some searches cost credits too. I know they need to get their money back from the cost of producing it, but I hope it isn't prohibitive .

It’s striking the right balance over the costs. I know where most of my direct ancestors were in 1921 it’s the brothers that I need to locate. So I’m going to wait until it’s included in the membership

We shouldn’t grumble, everything and all sorts at our fingertips at home now. No visiting the records office, or not if you didn’t live near to the place of your research interest, calling up films in advance, it was hard work.   I remember too having to pay per view the 1901 and waiting for the 1861 to come online A fellow rootschatter visited the ESRO and got me copies of 1861 census along with some copies of wills.  OK, we have to pay for subs but worth it in the long run.

Well, I'll certainly be shelling out for a few records, regardless of the upfront cost.

I tend to buy Ancestry /FindMyPast by the month anyway (or use the library and download at home when I do have a personal sub)

LIKELY 1921 will also be free ( initially) like the 1911 was at certain in-person locations.
Prep the searches beforehand and you can do an awful lot in even an hour.

Have just checked the date of the 1921 census as one of the people I would be in terested in looking at was born in that year. This is what I found:

"The United Kingdom Census 1921 was a census of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland that was carried out on 19 June 1921. It was postponed for two months from April due to industrial unrest and no census was taken in Ireland due to the Irish War of Independence."
