Ballinasloe Workhouse
« on: Thursday 18 June 20 19:56 BST (UK) »
This is my first time on this site so please bear with me.
Does anyone have access or information on how to get access to any records for Ballinasloe Workhouse.
I am informed that my Grandfather (James King) died there.
He was taken there after becoming ill from falling overboard whilst out Fishing from Roundstone, Connemara.
He was picked up by another fishing boat, but either he refused to go ashore as it would have disrupted the nights fishing or they did not take him ashore immediately.
I do not know what year this was other than it was after 1917.
All very vague but I need to start somewhere.

Many Thanks in advance for any pointers or assistance.

Jim

Looking at deaths registered in Ballinasloe district from 1917 there is only one James King in 1940 and he was 67 and a farmer.

Would they not have taken him to Galway, it's closer to Roundstone

In 1911 looks like that James King was a farmer & fisherman-

Welcome to Rootschat  ;)

I don’t know if this is the one Sinann quotes but this James King died in Ballinasloe Mental Asylum in 1940. He was 61 yrs and a labourer though.

Looking at his address, Errisbeg East, Roundstone, it might be this man. The age doesn’t tally though but sometimes this happens. Do you recognise any names, or the townland?

sorry not a farmer.

Looks like we are all looking at the same James King.

What happened in 1917, was this when his last child was born or some such, something we can look up perhaps that might set you on the road?

Firstly thank you all that have responded so quickly, very impressive.
The good news is I am sure this record is that of my Grandfather. It matches with the 1911 Cencus records.
The next difficulty I am having is the printed record states age as 67 ... but the handwritten page states 61...
It could be a badly written or faded 7. Also searching for birth records the handwriting is difficult to fully read... such as place of birth or mothers name. But it is a good start.
Is there any records of patient admissions, medical treatment recieved etc.
Once again Thank you all for your help..... Jim
