Susan MITTON - birth abt 1710 Heptonstall? Parents?
« on: Friday 19 June 20 15:17 BST (UK) »

Hello,

I'm looking for a birth/parents names for a Susan Mitton born about 1710.  She married John Wadsworth in 1735 in Heptonstall, Yorkshire.  Their daughter Ann was born in 1735 Halifax.

I can't find any birth for Susan Mitton.  If anyone could help me that would be really appreciated.

thank you

Do you know how old Susan was at the time of her marriage? Find my past has a transcript (no image) of a Susan Mitton baptised 24th Nov 1717 in Todmorden, about 4 miles away from Heptonstall.

Father listed as David Mitton, no mother listed.

What year is that, HMSerge? Closest one I can see date-wise on FindMyPast is in 1720.

Both records are fairly young for the 1735 marriage, being 18 and 15 respectively. Although as this is before the Marriage Act of 1753, I don't know how that would change things regarding 'marriageable age'.

Thankyou.  Do you think these could be the children (both called Susan) from the same father called Daniel. Maybe the first Susan passed away.  As both Heptonstall and Todmorden are very close.  I'm not sure on the Marriage Act of 1753.  I wonder if Mitton was a common name back then. I think it might be more harder searching for Susan than what I thought.  ???

Mitton seems to be a fairly common name in the area, judging by the records I've seen. I can find no parish burial records in Yorkshire on FindMyPast for a Sarah Mitton in between 1717 and 1720 so while I can't be certain it looks likely they are separate children.

I've found what I think is an image of the actual 1717 baptism:

'November 24  Susan daughter to Daniel Mitton of Walsden, Weaver.'

There's a series of other children born to a Daniel Mitton in Todmorden on FindMyPast, sadly most are just transcriptions, rather than images. There is an image for a Betty Mitton born to Daniel of Walsden. in 1719. Interestingly this page also holds the baptismal record for a John born to 'Daniel Mitton of Todmorden'. suggesting that there are at least two Daniel Mittons having children in Todsmorden at around the same time.

Edit: Do you have a full list of Sarah and John Wadsworth's children? It might be worth looking for potential repeated names in these earlier sequences of births.

Thanks.  The Todmorden birth  in 1717 is the most likely birth in my opinion, you’re right.  The other in Heptonstall makes her far too young to get married.

I don’t have any other children’s names only the Ann, unfortunately.

Typical there are two Daniel Mitton’s having children around the same time and both in Todmorden.
Maybe I should look at finding out Susan and John’s other children (if any).
Thank you for your help
