Thomas Moone and Mary
« on: Saturday 20 June 20 01:49 BST (UK) »

I hope someone can help me with a puzzle here. I am trying to establish two things:

1) a potential christening for Thomas Moone

2) the name of his wife and her potential christening.

As far as I know Thomas Moon had 8 children who are

John (August 1632) it looks like he died before  1640
Elizabeth (July 1634) - my ancestor
Thomas (August 1636)
William (February 1637/38)
John (December 1640)
Joseph (November 1646)
Joane (September 1650)
Mary (April 1655) she married James Fry

All of these were christened in Rotherfield in Sussex.

So far I haven't been able to establish who the mother was since I cannot find a marriage for Thomas that fits. There is a marriage for a Thomas Moon to a Mary Martyn in 1721 and I have located a christening for Mary dated January 1593/94. However this lady would be 38 when the oldest child (John) was born in 1632 and 61 when the youngest (Mary) was born in 1650 so it seems unlikely that she is the mother. Unfortunately I've so far not found any other possible marriages for Thomas.

As for Thomas I estimate he was born in the early 1600s probably in the Rotherfield or Mayfield area as a lot of my Moone ancestors seem to be based around there.

Luckily I have several wills for Thomas Moon's children so these confirm their identity and placement in relation to each other.

Is anyone here able to either suggest a possible christening for Thomas or a possible marriage (or marriages) in the area that could fit? I haven't excluded the possibility of him marrying twice.

Ideas and suggestions appreciated
