« on: Saturday 20 June 20 08:25 BST (UK) »
Looking for Joseph in the 1851 census but cannot find him anywhere.  In 1841 census his wife Hannah and children Thomas 18; William 16; John 15; George 7; James 4; Ann 14; Sarah 12 Lamesley subregistration Chester le Street.
Also, trying to establish wife's maiden name. Can anyone help with this.

Westee - The family in 1841 is listed with father John - Is it the right family that links to the 1819 marriage

Having said this there is a birth on the GRO Birth Index below that lists mothers maiden name as Bell
DIXON, MARGARET  JANE      mmn BELL
GRO Ref 1841  Sept Qrter CHESTER LE STREET UNION  Vol 24  Page 42

and there is this baptism with father John that ties in
Margaret Jane Dixon
Baptism Date:    17 Oct 1841    Chester-le-Street, Durham, England
Father:    John Dixon
Mother:    Hannah

I think that in 1851 the children listed in Tanfield in 1841 (with sister Margaret) were living without their parents  alll born Chester le street
Thomas Dixon    27  Stone Mason
Sarah Dixon    22
George Dixon    16
James Dixon    13
Margaret Dixon    9

Kay

Sorry - Should have said the 1819 marriage lists Hannah's surname as Bell

Just found a marriage  - 25 Nov 1821 Chester Le Street
John Dixon to Hannah Bell which looks more likely for the 1841 family

Excellent -
I was hoping the mother showed up as a Bell, so good to have confirmation.

However, Is'm a bit confused about the name Joseph Dixon and Hannah's marriage in 22/8/1819. St Hilda's Church, South Shields.  I wonder did he chose to be called 'John' at some point?  Maybe that is why I couldn't find them.  Is this a 2nd marriage in another Parish?  Don't quite get it yet.

I must admit that I think the 1821 marriage at Chester-le-Street is much more likely for the John and Hannah Dixon in 1841

Just checked the 1819 marriage at South Shields St Hilda's in 1819 and I can't see it on the images of the parish records on FindMyPast  :-\

I woulld think that the 1819 marriage is South Shields does not relate to the 1841 family.

I did find a baptism that might relate to the 1819 marriage

John Dixon - parents Joseph and Ann Dixon of South Shields - Joseph was a Mariner
16 Nov 1828 South Shields, St Hilda

Yep, agree.  Children all in 1851 census together relate to 1821 marriage; and especially with Thomas born 1824 fits in better.   Will continue with finding John and Hannah now.  Really great help - I had previously looked for them emigrating.

I would think that this John and Hannah died pre 1851 as the children were living without them in 1851.  How do John and Hannah link into your family??

Just checked the 1819 marriage at South Shields St Hilda's in 1819 and I can't see it on the images of the parish records on FindMyPast  :-\

It's not in the BT's on that date either
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6WKS-JTJ?i=237&cc=1309819&cat=1810087

The entry for the marriage in 1819 on FamilySearch is from microfilm 1894153
Which is
Marriages, 1901-1917 Marriage banns, 1773-1861
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NV14-W9V

And 22 August 1819 was a Sunday, when banns are called.
