Starting Point - NY

Good evening all,
I have been doing research for awhile, but today have been seeking out records in the US for the first time. Every country seems to have a selection of key / best sites, if someone could kindly point me in their direction, I would sincerely appreciate it.

As a specific question, is there any online database to see a death register (so you can see cause of death) for New York in 1912? In my Irish research, there is irishgeneology.ie where you can view a scanned copy of the registers and therefore don't need to purchase a certificate.

The specific record I am seeking is for Frances L McMahon.

Thanks, Kay. I found that one (and her twin baby brothers beside her). The twins died of cholera, which was referenced on their findagrave pages. Just looking to find a Frances’ caused of death at 21.
