Looking for parents of Ann(e) Hicks
« on: Saturday 20 June 20 13:36 BST (UK) »
Ann Hicks married Joshua Wallis on 30 Nov 1785 in Brightwalton.
The marriage was by licence, the transcript says she was 23, spinster and from Brightwalton.
Joshua, widower from Chilton. Bondsman John Dearlove farmer of Brightwalton.
I have found four children for the couple all bapt in Chilton, Ann, Joshua, Richard and Samuel.
Ann (Hicks) Wallis was buried in Chilton on 8 Apr 1827, Joshua was buried on 7 July 1802 also in Chilton.
Can anyone find a baptism for Ann please?

The only one I have found in Brightwalton which is close is 31 Mar 1765 d/o William and Ann, but that is for a Hannah Hicks.
A better match on name and date is in 1763 d/o Richard and Rachel, but in Uffington, which seems too far away.

Hi LizzieL,

PS;
Just realised, and after re-reading your earlier request that the Hannah Hicks, I found, is probably the same person you mentioned but with a different date.

Seems a strong possiblity.

Thanks, I'll check the date. I may have got it muddled with the Uffington one, just jotted them down on a scrap of paper, then posted afterwards. The date didn't quite fit with stated age on marriage licence but that may not have been quite the truth, and she was really under 21. I think age at death is better match with a baptism about 1865, but they are always a bit more suspect, as the deceased cannot give the information.
Ann and Hannah are often interchangeable. I think next move is to see if I can find a trace of either Ann of Uffington or Hannah of Brightwalton.

There's an Anne Hicks, child, buried at Uffington on 19 April 1769, but no parents' names given.

Thank you, I had wondered about that one but the transcript I found on FindMyPast didn't mention she was a child. The Ann bapt in Uffington in 1763 does seem the only candidate for  that burial. So I think the Hannah from Brightwalton might be the one.

I looked it up in the Berks Burial Index.  The only other note on the entry was "buried in woollen".
Interesting that the F M P transcriptions don't give the full details.
