Tried everything, both locally, nationally, and globally, to no avail, so have now sent for the marriage certificate....just hoping that if he was "non British" that it will still give his parents names.....should be here in about four days, maybe longer because of Covid.....I think that about ten years of looking is quite long enough......

Mmmhhh.......not seeing a birth for John Jay......there is one, for 7.9.1923 but it's in Staffordshire.....and the only death I can see for someone born on that  date is in 1993 in Cardiganshire Wales....that COULD be him......

OK So the one with that birth date is the one with Frank & Florence B in Duffield, 1939, is that correct, what does the marriage cert tell you of the occupation of both Frank & John?

Thanks, Yes that's them, I think there was also another child.....Isabel F Jay, born in June 1911, so too late to be on the census.....she IS on the 1939 register in Belper Derbyshire, given as a domestic servant.....

It's possible that John was born in Staffordshire, or at least the birth was registered there, not impossible I dare say, as Staffordshire shares a border with Derbyshire.....it gives a birth in September 1923, what's throwing me off is the mmn is given as JAY, when it should be Kniveton....again not impossible if whoever registered the birth gave the mother's MARRIED name instead of her maiden name......
