Marriage was 1946 Taunton per freebmd.  Have you looked for a birth reg for him or a 1939 register entry?  Vera was b 1913 Lincolnshire so he was probably a similar age

Have you bought a copy of the marriage cert to establish his age/occupation and his fathers name?

A child was born in 1947 who married 1963 - perhaps you could contact that child for info - details of birth & marriage are on freebmd

Thanks Carole, I can't seem to find a birth that fits, I have his marriage to Vera, on Ancestry, and the birth of the child at Boston, Lincolnshire, who presumably is still living......

1910-1914 only 3 births for John Jay - all others have middle initial.  Marriage cert is the way forward as you have Somerset, Lincolnshire & Hertfordshire for births & deaths so he could have been from anywhere

No tree online so no clues.  Only one likely death in Herts & he was b 4.7.1911 and had middle name Henry

Thanks Carole....the only thing I know for sure about him, is his marriage to Vera, in 1946 at Taunton, and that he had the nick-name Jack.....for some reason their daughter was born at Boston, Lincs, and then they moved to Hertfordshire....Vera was born in Lincolnshire, and her father Ernest Ayto was a policeman, first at Gainsboro' and then Spalding, Lincs. which is not that far from Boston....why they married at Taunton I don't know, I did wonder if Jack came from there....
