Seeking Parents of William James b c1850 who married Emma Double 1873
« on: Saturday 20 June 20 15:44 BST (UK) »
I hope this is ok but I started a thread on the Essex Board as my starting point in trying to find the father and mother of a William James who married in Colchester in 1873. It transpires that according to the 1871 Census William was born Newport Wales. Throughout his life in Census returns William gives a number of locations for his birth but I would think the 1871 one would likely to be the most accurate. His marriage certificate indicates that his father's name was George. I am wondering if anyone who only concentrates on Wales may be able to help further. James is a very common Welsh name I know, so finding the correct William and the correct George, is proving to be frustratingly difficult. The follow highlights William's life from 1971 to his death aged 50 in 1899.  (There is further info/possibilities on the Essex board but a fresh pair of eyes added to those who have already kindly contributed would be most welcome. Robin.

There is a William James, parents George  & Sarah James born about 1850 Risca Monmouthshire, he appears on the 1851 – 1871 with his parents but not after. Residence 1851 Risca, 1861 Mynyddyslwyn, 1871 Lower Machen . However no birth record as yet?

I’m not sure if this appears on the other post that Rosie has posted.

Thanks Colin, yes Ladyhawk posted similar, in addition A William aged 24 Burial 4 Mar 1874. So this may be why he wasn't found after 1871 Census. Thankyou for taking the time. Robin.

In my quest to find the parents of William James, I am particularly interested in the Mary James and William below. William's father is George but not noted here. In fact he is an enigma and so is his wife Mary in that apart from this Census I cannot find either of them after 1851.
Census 1851 Monmouth Cwmcarvan
George Griffiths Hd 56 Farmer of 50 Acres b Permatth
Sarah Griffiths Wife 62 b Cwmcarvan
George Son unm 23 b Permatth
Harriett Dau unm 18 b Trellick
Mary James Dau Mar 21 Ag Lab Wife b Permatth
William G James Gnd Son 1 b Trellick

William in this family is in Bristol with his Aunt in 1861 I however cannot legitimately link him to the William in the Army in 1871.

For info for anyone else looking noted on the other thread Mary’s pob looks to read PENNALTH

nothing much to add to the pages of research on your other post except to rule out a candidate.

Permatth is a transcription error for Penallth which probably should be Penallt.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01pn0/

1881 census 13 Watch House Parade, Newport RG11/5264 folio 21 pg 35
William G James head mar 30 mariner, unemployed b. Mon, Trellick
Mary Ellen Jones step sister 10 b. Lancashire, Liverpool
Henry Pring 21 boarder b. Newport

So he could be the William James aboard ship in Funchal bay, Madeira in 1871.

Looking at the militia attestation from 1883 for your William, his place of birth is given as Newport, Mon which is also noted as his place of residence. His age is given as 32 years 5 months on 28 March 1883, so should be just a few months old on the 1851 census.

Thankyou osprey, that is very interesting and thankyou for taking the time. I am trying to follow up on establishing the identity of Mary Ellen's mother. If we have the right family then mother should be Mary Jones in her second marriage, previously Mary James maiden name Griffiths.

So far I have hit a brick wall, however I did note the following Birth Registration, A possibility but not a given:

Jones, Mary Ellen 1870 Dec Qtr in Liverpool  Vol 8b Page 120. Mmn Griffith

I would really like to find Mary Ellen in the 1871 Census!
