Deciphering a Surname
« on: Sunday 21 June 20 03:02 BST (UK) »
I have a death certificate for a Letitia Freeland (Middle entry)
Her mother’s name is listed
I make it out to be Rachel McGilvray but I’m starting to doubt the surname.
The First name to me is definitely Rachel. The second name ?

If you drag picture to left you will see the name marked with the arrow
Need a second opinion.

I agree with McGilvray.

There are a number of ways you could confirm ....Letitia’s marriage and birth certificates should also name both parents, depending on dates.

I see that the informant was Letitia’s son - who may or may not have known his grandparent’s names, if you have reason to doubt the accuracy of the information.

You could also look for a marriage between John and Rachael McGilvray and include possible spelling variants.

Added: looking more closely I see that Letitia was born around 1836 but still worth checkng Church registers for her birth/baptism in case mother’s maiden name is noted.  :-\ One more thing - you could also check her siblings marriages or deaths to see if Rachael’s surname tallies.

Yes, it’s Rachel McLean née McGilvray.

I can’t see Letitia on the 1841/1851 censuses.

The marriage: FREELAND ROBERT to LETITIA MCLEAN/FR8286 (FR8286) 06/06/1854 644/1 440 452 Glasgow

Yes, definitely McGilvray. You may need to allow for variants in the spelling of the name when searching for further information. For example, McGillivray is a common spelling but different to yours.
