John Seldon 1752 Oakhampton? Devon

I have been researching the Seldon family and thought I had it all right.But I did my DNA and a distant cousin had the name Elizabeth Seldon born 1780 Shebbearr  of John and Elizabeth Mountjoy, married 1777 but my John Seldon married Jane Cottel 1777.  They had a son Richard born 1782 Okehampton.  We both have the same parents for John, Richard and Elizabeth? Hope this all makes sense, if anyone can help I would be very grateful.   Ps I haven't contacted the distant cousin as their tree doesn't contain any of my other relatives. Thanks.

I can see your difficulty.  There are two marriages for a John Seldon as you found, one with Elizabeth Mountjoy at Shebbear on 1st May 1777 and one with Jane at Oakhampton on 15th April 1777.

I see from the map that the distance between the two places is about 17 miles.

Is it possible that there were two John Seldon's living in the area?  Have you checked to see if there are any other John Seldon baptisms in the locality.

I see that John is stated as being of the parish of Bradford on both marriages.

Thanks, I have looked up so many different Seldon records, hopefully I am missing something and it will all fall into place,it's driving me mad.

Considering that there are only about two weeks between the two marriages, one would assume that there are two John Seldons.  Interesting that John in both marriages is of the parish of Bradford.

May need to consider digging around in parish records for the area to see how many John Seldon's there are.

Could one John have been somewhat older than the other?

Hi! I’ve been researching my family tree and discovered that John Seldon and Jane Cottel are my 6th great grandparents. While googling extra information I found this forum. I was wondering if you anything about the ancestry of John Seldon as I cannot seem to find anything on him. Additionally, I was also wondering if you had any information on his sons (Richard Seldon 1782 - 1846) wife Elizabeth? As I also have no information on her. Thank you in advance,
