Regiment Help
« on: Sunday 21 June 20 16:00 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

My great grandad and his brother are in the photos, but all of his brothers looked similar and I cannot work it out. Could anyone tell me which regiments these are for the both of them?

The names were John and Jonas Crossley.

Many thanks,

MJ

Hi, the man on his own is wearing the cap badge of The Essex Regiment. I am afraid I cannot help on the group photo.
Regards. Simon

Although there's no cap badge to I.D. there's no reason to believe it's not Essex Regt. as the tunic is correct.
It looks like a pre war annual camp. So either Territorials or Reservists.
The only Essex Crossley MIC is James E Crossley 3601 & 275598.
The 6 digit number is as a result of the TF re-organisation of 1917.
He was 6th. TF Batt. which is consistent with the above pic.
So did they have a brother James E
There is a Jonas AV (Albert Victor) Crossley b. 1892 Rifle Brigade.
This chap was accidently killed in March 1918.
NOK Doris Margaret nee Cooper. Is this one of them?

Thank you for this. Yes they did have a brother James and thanks to findmypast and war records, I’ve worked out that it’s James in the Essex Reg. Jonas was in Rifle Brigade and yes he was killed and so was John killed who was in the Kings Royal Rifles. I think the man in the group photo is Jonas in the Rifle Brigade as I have another photo of him and he looks similar. The brothers all look the same. Unfortunately my great grandfather isn’t in the photos I have. It’s the brothers. Thanks for the help with the Essex regiment.

It's not Jonas as he didn't attest until 1916.
This is a pre war man at camp.

I’m going by two other photos I have of Jonas that have his name on the back and it’s the same man in that photo as it is on the ones of the other two. How can you tell it’s pre war?

OK I must admit I rushed in a bit, apologies.
I've checked Jonas's attestation & he states he did 4 years in the 6th. Essex Regt.
pre war.
Men who joined for war service were issued with just one uniform as in pic. 1.
Pre war Regulars & TF were issued with 3.

I thought so. Where did you find his attestation papers? Are they online?

Yes the other man in pic one is James Edward Crossley who was in the Essex reg. I have another photo of the other brother John in the KRRC. I can’t find one of my great grandad, so will check the photo box again :)

Thank you,

Michael
