There is a baby Ronald Born 1899 mmn Howlett and a death in 1900 for the same.
Alfred Ronald who was born 1901 was perhaps named after him.

Thank you

Would you mind giving me an idiots guide as to how you found that info on there please?

You have to be registered with the site. It is free and easy.

Once registered login and there are a series of options

eg place an order (for a certificate)
view an order (eg to see when it may be dispatched)
     search the GRO indexes

Using search the Gro indexes you can search for birth or deaths for the years the site covers.
When you have selected search births or deaths it then is straight forward, the more information you can enter the better. Sometimes you will need to use a soundex for the names eg when names might have been misheard. Play around with it a bit and you will see its quite easy to use

Thank you. I've just had a play.
Tell me - when is it best to use FreeBMD to find a birth or death
And when best to use GRO?

Well the advantage of using the GRO site is it tells you the MMN for all births whereas FreeBMD only tell you the MMN from 1911 (from memory).

However if you don't need the MMN the FreeBMD does return results much quicker in my experience and you can search a much wider time frame in one go as well
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I agree with Davidft.

Free BMD has births, marriages and deaths
See here for years of cover. Mother’s maiden name is shown after 1911.
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/
You don’t need to sign up.

GRO - you sign up but free. Only shows births with mother’s name 1837 - 1919 (I think) and shows deaths to same time.

Also, FreeBMD only shows age at death from Jan 1866 onwards.  The GRO Index shows age at death for all the years listed.

A lot of things to remember but I'm sure you will soon get the hang of it.  :)
Robbins - Wolverhampton.
Spooner - Monmouthshire & Wolverhampton.
Warner & Loundes - Dudley/West Bromwich.

If you are dealing with one of those surnames where there are multiple possibilities for the spelling I find it is best to do the preliminary search on FreeBMD. So that you get the alternative spellings (as you can use wildcards there) then go over to the GRO and enter the spelling as recorded to find the maiden name.

Snap :-) If its a surname that really needs a search using wildcards (I have more than my fair share of those) I use the same double dip method.
