Philadelphia House of Corrections 1947
« on: Wednesday 24 June 20 18:58 BST (UK) »
Please can anybody help me,  Joseph Kynakides died on February 8, 1947 of heart failure apparently in the House of Corrections according to his death certificate. He was a US Merchant Marine veteran of WW1 and WW2, born in Greece in April 1886.

I am keen to find a Philly researcher who can help me to discover why he was apparently incarcerated and maybe find a police mugshot/record.  I am willing to pay for help and hoping that somebody will be able to assist.

Many thanks Pete

I'm not a Philly researcher, but am trying to find him in newspapers.  Does his death certificate give a "former" residence other than the corrections house?  Do you have his Naturalization papers?

I checked some newspapers, too.  No luck.  I don't find the name Kynakides but I do find people named Kyriakides.  Are you sure your spelling is correct?

I see his death certificate and his usual residence is Philadelphia, so if there is an obit, it should be there.  Lots of entries on Anc. for his sea travels.  Also found an entry in a Melbourne, Australia paper regarding him losing his US Naturalization and seaman's papers.

Thanks for your help.  Yes when he died (heart failure) his home was 211 Walnut Street, Phila and his natralization commenced 1916 and I think completed 1922,  505 South 3d Street, Phila, all of his contacts were in Phila.

I have found a heck of a lot of material on Ancestry but must have missed the Australian one, I shall go search for that now.

I just re-read your reply and see that it was a newspaper note in Melbourne/Australia, is there any chance of a copy of that pieces please ?

Hi Erato
the spelling varies considerably but he wrote his name Kynakides, others used variations from Kinakedes, Kyrakides, Kynakedes.   Thanks
