Electoral Registers post 1920 pre 2002
« on: Thursday 25 June 20 14:12 BST (UK) »
I may have got the parameters slightly wrong but ..can someone talk me through the availabilty of electoral registers .

I'd like to check a name in the more recent past 1977 say .

Are registers available for viewing at the British Library ?I know the geographgical location of the person in question .

Are old registers available in local libraries ?

Apologies if there is a relevant sticky that I've overlooked .

The British Library has the national collection of electoral registers from 1832 to the present day. The collection is complete from 1947 onwards, but patchy before World War 2.
Local Libraries should have copies.
England & Wales, Electoral Registers 1832-1932 are on Findmypast

Thank you ,that's very helpful .

Assume local libraries only hold their own locality ?

You will most likely need your central library or local studies/archives rather than a branch library.

"Infodisk" CDs were produced covering the whole country for most years from 1992 to 2009 (I think). They appear on auction sites, less frequently now than heretofore and often at exorbitant prices. The most common is 2003, found on cover disks and genealogy collections in a slightly crippled form. I understand some of the disks won't work on recent Windows versions. The software can be a bit touchy about how you enter searches or it sulks and says "not found". I have the full set if anyone wants a lookup (use a PM for possibly living people).
Researching Penge, Anerley, (incuding the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.

There is more information here

https://www.bl.uk/collection-guides/uk-electoral-registers

Have a look at the parliamentary holdings since 1832 pdf.

The BL only holds registers at St Pancras from 2000, everything else is in storage at Boston Spa and needs to be ordered 48hours in advance.

The BL is currently closed. They may or may not re-open around 4th July based n Government guidelines.

"England & Wales, Electoral Registers 1832-1932 are on Findmypast"
When I enter a member of the family in East Kent for 1930, for instance, and they are not there, is this because the records are missing?
I have never had much luck with electoral registers on FindMyPast, though a lot of the ancestors were not able to vote!
