claim records
« on: Thursday 25 June 20 16:31 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
There's a family story & I would like to find out if it's true.
James Hatch went to Australia to seek his fortune, there is a 'Hatches Creek' near Alice springs still on the map. We were always told it's near Alice Springs so maybe!

Are there records of claims or stakes or who named a creek? I have not been able to find him on any ships lists.

If he was in Australia afterwards went on to New Zealand & I have him in NZ where he married in 1868.
James Hatch born 1833, Middlesex London, I have him on the 1851 census in London.
Sorry to be a bit vague but as I said it's a story with not a lot to go on.
Thank you

Hatches Creek is more than 450 kilometres from Alice Springs.

Have you tried the NT Police Museum re Hatches Creek history?

Ahh.... thanks Sue,  I have now had a quick read on a link from that N Z thread .... So it seems to me that it would be unlikely that Hatches Creek was named after our OP's chap who arrived in NZ 1860s

Hi

Some info for "Hatches Creek", Northern Territory, AUS.
https://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/placenames/view.jsp?id=13468

Said to probably have been named for "Joshua HATCH, a stockman (1866-1930)".

Thank you, so it looks like the family story is probably wrong.
