Guildford and Woking Look Ups
« on: Thursday 25 June 20 16:39 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can I ask if anyone here is able to check for christenings in Guildford and/or Woking for the mid 19th century to early 20th century?

Many Thanks

Matt

You would be best to post what you are after.  Some records for both places are available online

Many thanks for that. I will post more details tomorrow. Where online would the records be available? I have had no luck with Familysearch so can you suggest another online source?

Ancestry has some Surrey parish registers.

Yes I was aware of Ancestry but unfortunately I do not have access as I am not a member and obviously the local library is shut at the moment. I had hoped Ancestry would make some records available for free like the National Archives have but so far I haven't seen anything.

I've been looking online for a free source to use but with no luck so far hence why I posted the request here.

I will keep an eye on Ancestry though in case.

Have you looked at your county library web page as it appears you can view Ancestry at home at the moment via their library app

As I said in my first post put the details on here as there are plenty of people on here who are able to help

There are plenty of transcriptions of Guildford registers available on FreeReg:

I understand that transcriptions may not necessarily be ideal, but they can at least provide clues.  And from my own experience it helps that (probably) several people have already spent hours deciphering sometimes awful handwriting.  I was looking at a Sussex register yesterday and mentally giving medals to the transcribers for their heroic efforts!

Hi

I normally visit the library to access Ancestry but I didn't know it could be accessed on their app. I have that on my phone but I have never seen it mentioned.

I'll pop some names on here tomorrow sometime. Like I said before it isn't an urgent matter, more like double checking before I post any names.

I don't have my list of names available to hand at the moment so I'll post more details tomorrow.

Thanks Nell.

Just took a look but sadly they end just before the time I need to look.

Never mind.
