Australian Passenger Lists - searching question
« on: Friday 26 June 20 20:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm a bit of newbie/sporadic genealogy researcher, I generally stick to the readily available online information - but, this time, I'm trying to dig a little deeper and see what I can find, maybe break down some walls. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone locally who can answer this so I'm hoping someone on here might be able to help me out.

I found a passenger record via Ancestry for a person I'm researching on a Victoria, Australia, Outward Passenger Index list. The Ancestry record links to the Public Record Office of Victoria. When I click it and go to their website, I then have to go to the section for Outward Passengers Lists and search with the person's name, and it shows up under that search. It then gives the month and year of the record and the Record Series Number so that you can order the microfilm to view it at one of their reading rooms.

My question is: Are these actual records available anywhere online (i.e. not just the indexes) or are they only available through the reading rooms in person in Australia? I've done some Googling using the name of Ship Master and the Ship's name and have found other voyages, just not the one I'm looking for. Are there other places to search for this record? Am I overlooking something obvious? I'm in the US and have access to a few of the bigger genealogy websites but I can't seem to find this manifest (I was hoping to see some of the names of others she may have travelled with on this voyage so, ideally, I'd like to see the whole record, not just her information).

Anyway, if anyone has experience with Australian passenger indexes/lists and can point me in the right direction, it would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Bev,
The year was 1887. And here's bit more of the specifics in case it's helpful:
The date was March, 1887, sailing from Victoria, Australia to Adelaide and Marseille.
The ship's name was the Sydney and the Ship Master was Pellegrin.
Would the name of the person be helpful? It is actually a mis-transcription but just let me know and I'll add it.
Thanks!

That was the first passenger list for March 1887

But within each month there doesn't seem to be any particular order? Not on this occasion!

jonw65,

Wow! That's it - well done! And it's there in big bold "March 1887" letters!
May I ask how you found that? Was it just a simple search? Did you have to scroll through many pages or did you find it right away? Like I said, I'm a bit novice at this game. Fingers crossed, I'll learn from my mistakes and get a little better.
Btw, I could have sworn I checked Family Search but who knows - lack of sleep, my dubious typing skills, or maybe I just omitted it? It's so nice to have a little help.
Oh, and thanks for the tip - downloaded ; )

Thank you so much for the link! I'm legit amazed.

Hi
There is an index here. Not sure how old/new it is on FamilySearch. I don't recall seeing it.
Australia, Victoria, Outward Passenger Lists, 1852-1924
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2527519

Without a name (or much idea what I was doing!) I found it manually via the films
