Mystery Wood Family
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 12:48 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I am just trying to find the family of my great great great grandfather.

I have a copy of the wedding certificate of my 3x grandfather Alfred Herbert Wood as follows;

1898 - Marriage solemnized at the Registry Office,
 in the district of Oldham, 8th May 1898
Groom: Alfred Herbert Wood         Age: 25 years, bachelor
Profession: General Labourer
Address: 1 Court 2, West Edmund Street, Oldham
Grooms father: Henry John Wood         Profession: Railway Signal Fitter
Bride:   Maria Annie Egan            Age: 21 years, spinster
Profession: N/A
Address: 1 Court 2, West Edmund Street, Oldham
Bride’s father: Michael Egan         Profession: General Labourer
Witnessed by: Louisa Hayley, Mary Newman

I am told by the family that he moved up from London to help build some factories in Oldham. I have Alfred and Maria on the census in Oldham but nothing for his family and no real leads other than the fathers name on the wedding certificate. I have seen several family trees listing Alfreds father as another Alfred but I feel this marriage certificate proves this to be incorrect and they provide no evidence of any link to this other Alfred.

Just a possibility, I’m sure you will get some experts weighing in soon! What if he was originally Herbert and added the Alfred later? There is a 1881 census for an Herbert Wood born 1873 Islington living with parents Henry John (a Carpenter) and Elizabeth. Mothers maiden name is Sidney.
Henry John remarries in 1901 and he is with wife Matilda in 1901 he is still listed as a carpenter but his neighbour is a railway signal fitter. Perhaps Henry worked as one too although though he considered himself to be a carpenter.

This Herbert had a brother and a sister Louisa Caroline, when she marries in 1884 she describes her father as a signal fitter. The brother describes him carpenter though  ;)

I just realised that his sister Louisa HAYLEY was a witness at his marriage.  Time for bed I think.
