1871 census request for Hawkchurch
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 22:05 BST (UK) »
I'm a bit confused for the 1871 census entry for a household I am related to. Here is the record on Family Search:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5R7-13W

My problem is the 5 year old boy, Benjamin Bowditch. I can find no records of him elsewhere, including on freebmd, GRO index or other censuses. Conversely, there is a girl, Bessie Bowditch, who was born in 1866 (i.e. 5 in 1871!) who is missing from this census, but who has many other records to confirm her existence:
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LT4T-8LW

So, I was wondering if perhaps the person who transcribed the 1871 census entry for this household somehow misread "Bessie Bowditch, daughter" as "Benjamin Bowditch, son"?

Are scans available on ancestry or elsewhere?

Thanks very much,

Jon

Bessie's birth reg in 1866 shows mmn as Bridle which is correct.  Spelling of surname varies

1860 marriage of Mary Bridle shows Abraham as Berridge

Children's births on freebmd & GRO

Amelia is Bowdige
Bessie is Bowdidge
Abraham is Bowditch as is George b 1873

No Benjamin so I think the 1871 is an enumerator error
