Emerton Hartfordshire - What uniform is this please?
« on: Monday 29 June 20 00:51 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to identify this chap who appears in a family photograph album I have but alas there are no details save the photo itself, I suspect his surname is Emerton and his family were from Hertfordshire, can anyone identify the uniform?  Dating through F.W. Clark is proving a challenge also.

Many thanks

I do not know if I am making a leap in the dark or have to be given points for at least trying but here is my effort on the uniform badge as worn by the soldier .............. Herts Cadets. First 3 badges top left. Is next badge right of the 3 the Durham Light Infantry?

And again one more Herts Cadets Badge. Durham Light Infantry badge similar but not the one mentioned above.

The collar badge is the 2nd South Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps:

https://www.kellybadges.co.uk/lapel-collar-badges-officers-collar-badges/38047-2nd-south-middlesex-rifle-volunteer-corps-fr---pre-1881--bronze-officers-collar-badge.html

And the buttons have the cornet of a Rifles Unit.

The rather ornate uniform is typical of a Rifle Volunteer Corps unit.  It would date to before 1908 when they and others became the Territorial Force.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Thanks for the great feedback all, he looks young for an officer perhaps (one of links states the collar badge was for officers) , I see Max states it likely taken before 1908, any further thoughts on a decade? Many thanks.
