Roman Numerals Query
« on: Monday 29 June 20 07:14 BST (UK) »
Could someone tell me what the attached number is please? I confess I haven't seen the letter 'c' used in this way before. Is it meant to be 619?
Cheers,
Bob

619 in Roman numerals would be DCXIX. Your puzzle might therefore end with 19 but I don't think the first three letters represent a number. What is the context?
Sinclair: Lanarkshire & Antrim; McDougall: Bute; Ramsay: Invernesshire; Thomson & Robertson: Perthshire; Brown: Argyll; Scott: Ayrshire: Duff: Fife.

It was in a sentence describing a number of people.

I also read it as 619.  It's not uncommon to see the C used in this way.  It breaks down as:

           (6 x C(entum) = 600) + 19

Found an example.  This is 1551:

ml vc lj = ((mille =1000) + (5 x Centum) + 51) = 1551

I am struggling to read the attached example but I can see the logic of the explanation. Nice to start the week learning something new.
