Free searching 1800 - 1000
« on: Tuesday 30 June 20 08:46 BST (UK) »
Hello knowledgeable people. I am on Ancestry and most of my relatives come from England, one or two from Scotland and Ireland.

Researching them should be simple but I can't conclusively prove links from end of 1700 where Ancestry does not take the DNA link back.

What do I do? I am really not getting anywhere. I know enough that I don't want to 'guess' or just take 'possibles' but I just can get anywhere.

What am I missing?

Thank you regards Janice

Links before 1800 have to be via documented records.
Parish records of baptisms, marriages and burials may help.
Manorial records, court records, newspaper reports all may help.

Not all of these records are free!

Try FreeReg.org.uk for parish registers.

You may also find information in the wills people left.
Depending on which County your ancestors lived in, you'll need to find which Court the wills were proved in.
Some of these are on findmypast.
Ancestry has the wills from The Prerogative Court of Canterbury.

As KGarrad has said, researching back beyond 1700 is not a simple task, and you will need to try and discover a range of documents in order to get evidence on which to base your family tree.

County Record offices in England hold a wealth of material, much of which will never get on-line.
