Death Record Data 1846 -1860
« on: Tuesday 30 June 20 12:40 BST (UK) »
I am searching for a relative who was recorded on the 1841 census as living in Northumberland and  in local newspapers I found an entry that his business was up for sale in 1846 (his contact details given regarding the sale so he was alive in 1846).
He was born in 1795 yet I can find no record of death at all. I have searched ancestry websites, BMD records and gov UK yet can find nothing, including Scotland’s People. I am sure he did not emigrate and feel it is unlikely he moved away from the area entirely, yet he is not on 1851 Census so I can only assume he died before 1851. No death or burial record to be found
Is it common for no death certificate/ record of death to exist ?
I have had no trouble finding death records for other family members around this time. His baptism record, marriage bond, marriage records and births of children plus 1841 Census details all available but after 1846 nothing !

I'd say a death post 1846 would be very likely to be registered if he died in England.
What was his name?

Yes it does happen that people are buried without a death certificate.

I have an ancestor who died in 1870. I know when and where he was buried from parish records but there is no death certificate for him. Durham registrars office did a search of their records for me and said there was no death record.

What you may find useful is to search some sites you may not have looked at including Durham records online (covers Northumberland) https://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/index.php?q=1&cookiecheck=1 or findmypast.co.uk which has a lot of Northumberland parish records.

Good luck
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

If a anyone carried out a burial for which the Certificate ( that the Death has been duly registered) had not been made and delivered, as the 1836 act required, either by the Registrar or Coroner, they had to give notice  to the Registrar within Seven Days,  if they did not they were liable to a fine not exceeding ten Pounds, however some deaths may not have been registered.

Thank you
He was Christopher Carr (born 1795 Rothbury) married Ann Bolam (1822) then lived in Elsdon and had four children. Had Bird in Bush, Elsdon, according to 1841 Census then

Newcastle Courant entry for 1846
Bird in Bush to let for 9 years with 24acres land currently occupied by Christopher Carr

Then I can find nothing more after he was 51 and presumably left tenancy of Bird in Bush.
Can’t locate him on 1851 Census or find any death record.

Thank you ! Very grateful for your find.
The entry seems to prove that he had died at some point between 1846 and 1857, probably before 1851 if he doesn’t appear on the census. I am surprised there is no registration of the death though.

Have you found his wife in 1851.

There is a widowed Ann Carr, Innkeeper age 56 in Market Street, Hexham.

No, that is possible. I don’t know age of his wife Ann Bolam to check or indeed where she was born. I assumed it was Elsdon. However I did find a record in 1851 Census which I think might be the deceased daughter Ellen (Eleanor)Bolam Carr ( mentioned above) living with an aunt Eleanor Bolam in Salford, Manchester.  I found this surprising but her birthplace is given as Northumberland . Sadly it isn’t possible to crosscheck age as writing is indistinct but could perhaps be 18. The aunt is 54 and also born in Northumberland.
Eleanor Bolam would be I assume Christopher’s sister in law if they belong to the same family.

I attach the relevant section from the Manchester 1851 census
