Charles-Isabella?!
« on: Thursday 02 July 20 10:58 BST (UK) »
I have found a 3rd great-aunt born 1871 in Moray, Scotland who seems to be called Charles-Isabella Jane Smith. I've looked at the birth record and her marriage record and both clearly say this name. Has anyone else come across anything like this? A male name given to a female? It's especially strange because there doesn't even seem to be any other Charles in that branch of the family.

Hiya and a warm welcome to Rootschat
her mum was Margaret Morrison - is there any Charles in the Morrison family ??
there have been occassions when a child is born and sponsored by a family member with cash put aside for education - could this be one of those occasions - did the family have money / were they rich ?
John Waynes real name was Marion Morrison - maybe it is a Morrison trait - you never know  :)

do you know anything about the village she was born - Knockando ??

how ironic - the Highland games should start in Knockando tomorrow - I presume with Covoid 19 it is cancelled

I have just entered Charles as a female record, no dates no county,  on SP Church Registers and got 9 pages of them.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thank you for the replies :)
After a bit more digging I think I have found a couple of Charles Smiths - possibly her uncle and cousin. So that may explain where it came from. Still seems like an odd choice. I'll check death dates in case it was a tribute? They are mostly farmers so don't think she would have been sponsored. I'll keep a more open mind about male names for females in my future research!!
Garstonite - I will definitely be looking into Knockando as seems this whole branch were born, lived and died there. Hopefully will get up there in person as well soonish.
