George Higgins Melmoth of Ringwood
« on: Saturday 04 July 20 22:26 BST (UK) »
Today for the first time I came across my gt grandmother's birthday book.
Her name is Bessie Higgins b 1865 Tatworth, Somerset.
Her father George Higgins bapt 1837 Bradford Abbas, Dorset.

In the birthday book there are a number of Melmoth's. It is a name I have never heard of. Why is there a George Higgins Melmoth b 25/4/1876. He probably died in the first quarter 1951 in Christchurch.

Any thoughts/help would be very helpful as this is intriguing as I am wondering if he is related?

Thanks Mark

If it’s any help. George Higgins MELMOTH of Kington Common Ringwood died the 1st February 1951, Probate granted to his widow Emily Beatrice.
.

HIGGINS was his mother’s maiden name.

Mary HIGGINS married Nicholas MELMOTH in Blandford RD in 1866. She was born in Bradford Abbas in 1844 and appears to be your George HIGGINS younger sister in the 1851 census, therefore Bessie’s aunt.

Very many thanks for your very fast and helpful response. How do you think it is possible to find the full name of the mother? I had thought there was only the one branch of the Higgins family in the Chard area of Somerset.
Many thanks again, Mark

Do you mean the mother of George HIGGINS, Bessie’s grandmother? If so, she was almost certainly Jane PAUL. If you look at the HIGGINS family in the 1851 census in Bradford Abbas Jane’s mother Elizabeth PAUL is living with them.

If you mean Bessie’s mothers name it was RING according to the Births index.

For some reason I could not see Mary. That makes perfect sense as it shows she is the brother of George Higgins. Thank you for sorting this out for me.
