BAPTISM of Mary TOMPSET bat 1705 possibly Ticehurst
« on: Sunday 05 July 20 07:22 BST (UK) »
Mary TOMPSET daughter of Joseph TOMPSET of Ticehurst married Joseph NEWINGTON son of Samuel NEWINGTON & Frances BURGIS.  Mary NEWINGTON nee TOMPSET and her husband Joseph's remains are interred in the Church at Ticehurst.

The memorial as provided by Professor Nigel Llewellyn at https://www.sussexrecordsociety.org/dbs/esm/monument/0025805818/ notes Mary is a daughter of Joseph TOMPSET with a birth about 1705.  I am unable to locate Ticehurst during that time at FamilySearch and hoping for some assistance please.

How do you know she was a daughter of Joseph?

There is a baptism in 1707 for a daughter of James

But said here to be 1708

http://theweald.org/N10.asp?NId=140050135

There are errors on this site wrt to my own family, so it does need checking, but a good place to start..

It is rather worn, but has the professor got it right? Looking at the images it seems to me to say that Mary was the wife of Joseph Newington and the daughter of Mr. James Tompset.

Played around with the levels on that photo and it does say James Thompset.

There doesn't seem to be a baptism in Ticehurst for Mary Thompset (or variant) in the appropriate time-frame and I'm struggling to find one in Sussex.

I don't want to hijack this thread but I cant find a baptism for Sarah Tomset/Thompsett (or variant) in Heathfield c1815 either.

Perhaps this is the one that Mckha had in mind.
20 July 1707, at Wadhurst
Mary Daugh of James & Sarah Tompsett
Also tells us that James was a yeoman

James of Ticehurst does start off his will by giving fifty shillings to the poor of Wadhurst.

Well done with the photo, Nell. Definitely is James.
