The Thomas Wood s sear h
« on: Sunday 05 July 20 10:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out information about my great grandfather Thomas Wood and his father Thomas Wood! They both worked in the Beer retailing, publican industry and have found some useful stuff from Kelly’s, census returns and Pub Wiki but still lots of blanks so wondering if anyone has any pointers? Thomas Wood senior:

Born approx 1831 in Aveley Essex (so the census says but can’t actually find this), first real indications 1871 census - living in 5 Green Street, Mile End Old Town as a beer seller, says married to Alice Mary Oddy but I actually found a record for 1880 for a wedding 31 Coborn Road
1881 - 104 Globe Road, Mile End
1884 - 1889 155 Hoxton Street which is the White Horse pub
He died in 1889 and his wife Mrs Alice Wood listed as licensee but although I’ve found electoral registers and Kelly’s entries for him for these years I haven’t found one that actually calls him the licensee.

I’ve tried all sorts and am coming up with dead ends, can’t find any evidence before 1871 that I can prove is him and also don’t know if 5 Green Street and 104 Globe Road were pubs. Anyone got any ideas please?

Also Thomas Wood marriage to Alice Mary Oddy says widower and I think his first wife is the mother of my great grandfather Thomas born about 1868 but I can’t find who she is, checked lots of leads but nothing positive, always thought he was born in Hoxton but on 1911 census he says Fulham. In GRO index can’t find any births about 1868 for Fulham, Help!

I know you guys are great and I’ve seen some of the wonderful ideas you come up with so thought I’d try my hand here!

Thanks in advance,

Lesley

Thomas Wood jnr was born in Hammersmith according 1871 census, same place as Alice. There are 4 Thomas Wood's birth reg in Kensington district (covers Hammersmith) in 1867 +/- 2 years.
Mother's maiden names are Tomlin, Elson, Kirk and Knight. The latter is for a Thomas Henry Wood.

As the marriage of Thomas snr wasn't until 1880, could Thomas jnr be Alice's son and Thomas snr still married to 1st wife in 1871 but separated?

Hi,

Thank you I will check out those references, I did wonder if he was separated and Alice could be Thomas Junior’s mother. I checked for Women Wood deaths between 1871 and 1880 also but couldn’t find anything promising. They have a daughter, Alice Mary, together in 1880 so wondered if that’s why they married then and had just been living together beforehand. Thanks for those reference though will check them out,

Many thanks,

Lesley

Oh but he says his father's William Wood, wasn't the father Thomas as well on the 1880 marriage?
But William as father matches with a baptism in Aveley in right time period

added
Thomas's signature on two marriage records

I noticed the different father's names but it's not that unusual is it.
Also in the 1880 marriage lists him as a coachman.
Beer sellers aren't necessarily licenced victuallers.

The signatures confirms it's the same man.
Moving on a bit I know but the Tomlins appear on the census & there's no Caroline.
Possibly Clara Tomlin b. 1840. Died 1842.
