The signatures confirms it's the same man.
Moving on a bit I know but the Tomlins appear on the census & there's no Caroline.
Possibly Clara Tomlin b. 1840. Died 1842.

I thought the signatures the same -  allowing for the passage of time. There is a Caroline as a servant in 1861, but she might be a bit old.

Caroline in 1851

Piece number 1575 Folio 224 Page 13

Don't think the one I found earlier is right - too young and born in Kimpton, Herts (15 miles from Watford)

Thomas' birth from the GRO as mentioned by Lizzie

WOOD, THOMAS       TOMLIN
GRO Reference: 1867  J Quarter in KENSINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 209

There's a death of a Caroline Wood age 43 same quarter in kensington district.

If that's her why did Thomas and Alice not marry straight away, why wait until 1880?

I saw the older Carolines but 45 is old even for today to be having a first child
but it looks like her I must admit.
A thought, I wonder if Thomas is the child of one of the unmarried daughters to George Tomlin
& Caroline has adopted him & registered him in her name.

Wow thank you all for all these ideas I need to have a good look and see if it fits. I hadn’t realised Hammersmith was in the Kensington area back then!!

Hi all,

I’ve had a good look at all this information and it’s all possible. If Thomas junior was born J qtr 1867 that would fit ok with abt. 1868 which seems consistent throughout all of his records. It would also be very feasible if Caroline died same qtr aged 43, a bit old for a first child though but might explain complications and death.

I’ve always had doubts about Thomas Senior’s age as it’s never been the same twice, on 1881 census it says 60 although very difficult to read and when he dies in 1889 death stated age 70 So I think the 1831 Aveley can be taken with a pinch of salt. The only birth I found in Aveley 1831 for a Thomas Wood father William I followed through and came to the conclusion it wasn’t him.

I’m not convinced the 2 signatures are the same on the 2 wedding certificates though but I’m definitely not a handwriting expert!

My biggest worry is that I can’t tie them together. I have been focussing on the beer retailing as that’s been fairly consistent and I know not necessarily a Licensed Victualler although that does come up. I just wish I could pinpoint him before 1871. The marriage between Caroline Tomlin and Wood 1865 states residence as Peckham Rye but I haven’t as yet found anything that ties him in here. Thus said I haven’t found him anywhere for definite before 1871 Green Street.

By the way I think Alice Mary Oddy was either a bit of an opportunist or convenient for Thomas senior, and I suspect she worked at the pub with him 1871 and then when she got pregnant 1880 they got married. Thomas senior died jan 1889, she got all the proceeds from his estate in Feb 1889 And then remarried James Robinson in Dec 1889, her luck ran out though as she died 1890 and James inherited the proceeds of her will and became the licensee of the pub.  1891 census shows Thomas Junior still at Hoxton Street before marrying later that year!

Thanks for all your hard work it’s definitely not an angle I had found!
