Cleaning marble can take the skin off it & lead to more damage.

Is the black mark in the  marble not water damage ? I don’t think much can be done about that.

Black staining on carboniferous stone used to be cleaned with a weak acidic solution (somewhat stronger than rainwater) until they realised that it was etching away the surface. Nowadays, it’s removed by spraying it with plain water for an extended period.
