Seamans Missionary role
« on: Sunday 05 July 20 18:00 BST (UK) »
An ancestor of mine was a "Seamans Missionary" and fisherman from Newlyn . "Can anyone tell me anything about this role back in the 1900s?". This information can then be noted in my Family history files. I appreciate any help here. Thanks.

Seamen's Mission is now called Mission to Seafarers. It's a Christian welfare charity for merchant sailors. Founded mid-19th. century by Anglican Church. Later expanded to serve lighthouse keepers and lightships.
Provided seamen's centres in significant ports.
Information online including:

Archives of Seamen's Mission and Apostleship if the Sea (R.C. equivalent) at Hull History Centre, Hull University Archives. Seamen's centres in some ports were operated jointly by the two organisations for the sake of efficiency.
See also National Archives Discovery catalogue for locations of other Seamen's Mission Archives, e.g. Liverpool.

The Methodist churches also had a Seaman's Mission, founded 1843. It ran the Queen Victoria Seamen's Rest in London Docklands.
 Another organisation is Fishermen's Mission.

Googling Newlyn’s Seamen’s Mission produces many interesting hits.
