My ancestor was Sussex born Sir Stephen Borde who wed Mary Cartwright in 1605 at St Dunstan in the West, London. Stephen was a barrister and had been knighted in 1603 at Whitehall. Stephen's family have been researched quite well. I have been trying to find the origins of Mary Cartwright for ages. I did consider London baptisms and managed to rule out a Marie Cartwright born 1584 in London. I then found a Mary Cartwright baptised in 1586 in London, daughter of Peter Cartwright.
Stephen and Mary Borde had a son Thomas who left will in 1650 and mentions an "Aunt Atkinson". In 1619 a Sarah Cartwright wed John Atkinson in Friday Street London. I did consider this. I then came across a John Cartwright of Lincoln's Inn, son of Peter Cartwright of Kings Lynn Norfolk. In 1609 a John Cartwright, gent, was mentioned when Sir Stephen Bord and his wife were defendants in Star Chamber court case. I thought, well, a possibility but need more evidence due to Cartwright being a common surname.
I then looked through all Cartwright wills 1590-1660 in the PCC indexes. I found a Peter Cartwright will in 1597, he mentions children Mary, Sarah, John, Samuel and Peter, and wife Margaret. Peter also mentions the Oxborrow family of King's Lynn. In 1624 Margaret Oxborrow left a will. She mentions her Cartwright grandchildren and sons Peter and Samuel Cartwright, and mentions son in law Sir Stephen Board and her grandchildren Sarah, Jane, Thomas and John Board, and daughter Atkinson.
So has given me a whole new load of ancestors to research and another Norfolk connection. Peter mentions a brother Humphrey Cartwright and sister Alsop. Peter Cartwright was a merchant and Mayor of King's Lynn in 1591. He also was involved with land at the hospital of St Mary Magdalen in Gaywood.
