John BOTTOMLEY soldier 1796
« on: Monday 06 July 20 13:29 BST (UK) »
He was a soldier in the artillery - but which regiment? I cannot decipher the one or two words between 'soldier' and 'artillery'.

There's a long gap between banns and marriage (which was in Bradford St Peter, YKS) - presumably he was serving somewhere.

Trying to work out who he was.

Hi,

I was wondering whether it might say "Train":

https://www.thefreedictionary.com/Train+of+artillery

The bit before looks like something with a superscript - maybe 5th(?)

Let's see what the experts say.  :)

Best regards,
Karen

It look like 'Train" to me too.
The marks before presumably a number as Karen says - you can see the 'th', but goodness knows what the number is! At least you can say it's a single digit, and doesn't seem to have any straight lines - so not '1' or '7'. Also not '2' as that would have 'nd' after it, and not '3' as that would have 'rd'. Narrowing it down!

Thanks Karen and goldie61. I'd never heard of a Train of Artillery, so that's a splendid idea. I've also found a reference to a (modern day) 'Training Regiment' within the Royal Artillery so that's maybe another possibility. So, 'Train' it is, whatever it actually means.

Re the number, no amount of image enhancement gives any clue. One thought of mine is that it's supposed to be '6th' with no top to the 6 - similar to the nearby 'Sally' which also lost (almost) all of one 'l'. Another thought, probably best discounted, is that it was intended to mean 'with'.

So "Soldier 6th Train Artillery".
