you can request a search of the 1939 register for a closed record but there is possibly a fee via the National Archives. Not sure what the cost is via FindMyPast

I wonder if they had any children?

The 1911 gives the number of children that a married woman has had.  You would need to look at the original as we are not allowed to give that info from the census, but that is why I said that Edna may have been adopted.

If you have a FindMyPast sub they will open the record on production of the death certificate but you would have to give the address they are living at.   It does look as though the blacked out records are of the infants as one is open and has a 1939 birth date.

William Edward Williams and Ellen Crawford, she married Ronald Malcolm Batty in 1947. There are a few trees on Ancestry.com researching this family.

Our Edna never married as far as we can ascertain - she was still single in the 1970's when Terry made enquiries at social services - my mother in law verifies this also. It is possible of course that she married late in life.

I definitely think it worthwhile to subscribe to FindMyPast - even if baby Terry isn't there at least I will be able to benefit from being a member re my genealogy research.

This is good - I can now eliminate William and Ellens' Edna - this 1939 entry is looking more and more  promising.
